Traditionally, the development of the curriculum in Australian schools has been the responsibility of the various states and territories. In recent years, however, a major effort has been made to reduce curriculum differences across Australia.

Since 1989, the states, territories and commonwealth have worked together to produce curriculum statements covering a number of broad areas of learning (sometimes referred to as 'a key learning area').

Not all states and territories use the same terms to describe the broad learning areas, but the terms they do use are similar.

In Victoria, Primary Schools are guided by the Board of Studies, Curriculum and Standards Framework (C & S F II) documents in the eight key learning areas. Course Advice Statements and materials are also provided to support the C & S F II documents.
